Word will not automatically open downloaded documents.

Greetings.
I'm downloading Word documents with Safari to my desktop, but I have to
then open them manually from Word. I'm sure there's a setting so that
these docs will either automatically open when they're downloaded, or
will do so when I click on the icon in the download manager. Can anyone
enlighten me?
Thanks.

I think the setting would be in Safari rather than in Word, and I suspect
it's not a per-program setting--e.g., one setting to open all pdfs, .docs,
etc that get downloaded.

And yep, in Safari | Preferences, General pane, there is a checkbox to "open
safe files after downloading."

In Safari, go to Safari>Preferences>General and check the box to "Open
"safe' files after downloading. There's no other required setting I am
aware of.
