Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Word for Mac 08 will not delete text in most parts of an existing doc.

Sorry, but without some degree of detail it's quite difficult to offer
anything meaningful. My only guess is that you've received the "doc" from a
WinWord user who has protected parts of it. Protection schemes are more
robust in the recent Windows versions, but you can try Tools> Unprotect
Document. If the Protection isn't password protected or if the sender
provides the password you may be able to turn the protection off.

If Protection isn't the issue you'll need to be much more descriptive of the
source of the document, the type of content you're trying to delete, how
you're going about editing the file & what - specifically - happens or
doesn't happen contrary to your expectations. Any details you can supply
could be important.

New Macbook and Office. Doc says "xxx.doc" (compatibility mode). The doc we first had problem with was done on our old Ibook computer this month, in Word for Mac c.2002. It had pasted-in emails. No protection shown. Compatibility shows "recommendations for [custom]".

WORD will delete text if cursor inserted, but NOT if text is highlighted.

Same results found with new doc just done on the new computer.

Thanks

Since you still haven't indicated your version-specific info the first thing
to suggest is that you confirm that Office is fully updated to 12.2.3 & that
your flavor of OS X is fully updated to 10.6.2 as well. Launch Apple's Disk
Utility & run the Repair Disk Permissions routine on your HD.

A further guess as to the deletion issue is that you check Word>
Preferences> Edit to make sure there is a check in the box for 'Typing
replaces selection'. If the insertion point is returning to the beginning of
the selected passage when you press 'delete' that's the most common cause
but I can't be sure since you've given no such description. If that doesn't
resolve it I can't suggest anything further.

Thanks, CyberTaz. Checking "Typing Replaces Selection" worked!

Sorry I didn't understand that your asking for "some degree of detail" meant you wanted to know what version of Word and OS we are using. For the record, OS 10.6.2, and Word for Mac 12.2.3.

Again, thanks.

Glad all is well!

It's always a good practice to specify version information in any post. It
sometimes isn't needed but if it is you'll save a lot of delay by including
it right off. The main missing piece here though was that you stated what
*didn't* happen when you pressed delete, but you didn't specify what *did*
happen... So I took a lucky guess :)
