word will not start at all

I am running office 2003 prof. all programs but word will run. i have
un-installed and re-installed office 2 times with different sources
(cd/network). there are no error messages. I have also deleted all
normal.dot files i have found. I could not find any data folder in the reg as
indicated by other questions. I have also tried to run winword.exe /a; /x; /r
but no luck. The program does not start at all. There are no processes under
task manager that indicated winword.exe. I do have vscan running however,
when i watch it, the last scanned folder is host intrusion prevention. It is
a Mcafee Product.

Reinstalling rarely works because add-ins, templates, registry and printer
driver are unaffected. See
