Problem sorted. Thanks.

Duncan

But apparently only temporarily. The problem is back, and deleting
temporary files doesn't help. I tried revisiting the FAQ site, and Windows
hung. I've also discovered that trying to edit text in Visio hangs Windows.
I can create a text box and enter text OK; I just can't return to it and
edit it. So it appears that Windows is having major problems displaying
graphics on Web pages (which seems to be what was happening when it hung),
any diagrams / equations in Word files, and text (for editing purposes) in
Visio.

All I've done since the problem was apparently fixed is network my PC with
another PC (so I'm now using a fixed IP address), and install VNC. I've
tried allowing Windows to assign an IP address (doesn't help). I'll paste
my original post below for anyone who missed it. I'd be grateful if anyone
could help me sort this out. I'm losing hours of time I need to be spending
work. Thanks. BTW, I have tried reinstalling Visio (to no effect).

Original post:

Hello,
I'm having a major problem with Word at the moment and would
appreciate any help. On pasting a Visio drawing into Word, Windows hangs
and I need to reboot. Saving as a .tif and trying to Insert | Picture |
From File also results in Windows hanging. However I can paste into Paint
without any problem (although I tried Excel, and that hangs Windows too). I
can paste text into Word quite happily. On opening an existing file which
contains drawings Windows hangs as soon as I try to scroll down. I have
tried creating an equation in Word, and I can insert / edit the equation,
but Windows hangs when I click away from it.

I've reinstalled Office to no effect. I have Word 2002 (10.2627.3501) SP-1
running on Windows 2000 Pro Version 5.0 (Build 2195: SP2). This problem
started when Windows hung on booting and I had to uninstall my AV (AVAST4)
to get it up and running again. So the two problems might well be related.

A glance at the Application Log shows that I am getting warnings at around
the time Windows is hanging.

Source : MsiInstaller
EventID: 1015
Failed to connect to server. Error: 0x800401F0

If anyone can give me a clue how to fix this I'd be very grateful. I
scanned for viruses before closing down last night, and I scanned using
Adaware and Spybot both last night and today and found nothing suspect.
Thanks.

Are you using Norton Anti Virus? If so, open NAV and disable the Office
Plug-in option.

At the moment I'm not using any AV software (as it was my AV software that
first started playing up, so I uninstalled it). That said, I'm confident
it's not a virus. I haven't (knowingly) installed any new device drivers
recently. I did install Hummingbird Exceed, but that was several days ago.
All I've done over the last couple of days is network the PCs and install
VNC; but my system was clearly a bit fragile before that :-(. My guess is
that there's some common thing that Windows attempts to run when displaying
a graphic in a web page, a diagram / equation in Word, or the contents of a
text box in Visio. Unfortunately I haven't got a clue what it might be
(unless it *is* the MsiInstaller service?). Cheers.

And to further clarify / confuse, IE is quite happy to open the FAQ page;
it's Netscape 7.1 that chokes.

Something I rarely recommend is reformatting your hard disk and starting
again as it is so time consuming and takes ages to get everything back to
how 'I' like. But in this instance, it would seem a new build may be worth
the effort.

Here are a couple websites describing the event ID and Source of the
event:
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=+1015&source=MsiInstaller
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;294014

The error is apparently related to Visio
"When Visio is started, the local .msi package is queried to get a
list of what is installed or installable when the program starts. As a
result of this, the installer writes these events into the log files."

"On a system where Visio is used as part of an automated process, it
may be possible to fill the event log (512-KB default size), which, in
turn, generates a system warning."

This led to the solution at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;109443

but someone on a tech forum related that this solution did not work.
No harm trying though.

No way. And before you do any reformatting, at least try and look for
some support at

Yes, I'm trying to resist reformatting for now. I did that a while back,
but started to get random reboots after reinstalling everything. My
employer won't let us have original disks to install from, and I suspect one
of the copied Visual Studio disks was a bit iffy. Somehow I managed to get
rid of the random reboots, and it was stable for a while, but over the last
couple of weeks the wheels seem to have started coming off everything. I'll
try your links before I bite the bullet. Cheers.

If I can't get Word working again I'll have to. This is strange. Deleting
the temporary files seemed to sort it, then it just went again. Then again,
this seemed to start with AVG hanging Windows when I tried to update the
virus definitions. So it's maybe down to something that I wouldn't find in
a million years. Cheers.

You might consider this: If Norton AntiVirus (even a trial version) has ever
been installed, then the DLL for the Office Plug-in could still be
registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:

Visio is the problem area. I wouldn't reformat anyway over an issue
concerning a single program.

I've never had Norton on my machine, but I suppose there could be an AVG
plugin floating about somewhere. AVG *was* the first program to start
playing up.

I'm curious if any of the problems specifically involved AVGCORE.DLL

We'll probably never know. I haven't solved it yet, and it looks like I'll
be buying a new HD tomorrow (so I can keep my data on the existing HD) and
having a fresh install. I did use AVG quite happily for a year or so before
it started to hang Windows when I tried to update. Quite what that has in
common with Visio, Word and AVAST4 going doolally I don't know. The other
twenty-odd applications I have installed seem rock solid. As a last gasp
experiment I might "un-network" my PCs. It just seems that the two or three
times my PC has become unstable it has been shortly after networking it to
another PC. By the time I get it stable, the network needs setting up
again. Maybe coincidence, or maybe I'm doing something stupid when setting
up the network. I originally thought it might be a corrupt installation of
Visual Studio. I had a solid system, I installed a few apps (including
Visual Studio) and set up the network, then I started getting random reboots
/ blue screens of death. I managed to solve them (not sure exactly how
because they were relatively infrequent and unpredictable). Then I set up
the network again, and Windows starts hanging (but in a very predictable
way). So basically I haven't a clue :).
