Word without Works?

Must I keep MS Works installed, despite the fact that I don't use it, in
order to have Word 2000 function?

No. Word 2000 is a separate program from Works. If you got Word
2000 as part of Works Suite 2000, and you uninstall the rest of
Works Suite, then you should also uninstall the Works Suite
Add-In for Word while you're at it.
