Word won't launch - hangs on splash screen

I'm running OS 10.3.5 and I can't get Word to launch. I've tried
reinstalling it and dumping the prefs. It starts to launch, then stops
at various points while loading Visual Basic, the font menus, etc. I
get the spinning BBOD that never goes away and the program never
launches. I have to force quit to get it out of the loop.

Any help, ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.
