Word won't open after uninstalling Office 2003 reinstalled 2000

I had a pre-installed trail version of Office 2003 (Student & Teacher) on a
new laptop purchase. After the 90 day trail period, I uninstalled Office
2003 and installed Office 2000 (Professional). Now Word will not open - it
just hangs. When I go to Task Manager to close it down I see TWO icons for
Word not responding. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Word a couple of
times trying to repair. All other programs work fine.

Don't know if this matter, but I did try to open a Word 2003 document with
Word 2000 (without thinking about compatibility). This was the first time I
had the hanging problem.
