Word won't open and locks up computer

When I try to open Word, it shows the intial dialog box,
bu then locks up the computer. The computer must then be
restarted. After doing cont/alt/delete it says the
computer resouces are low. However, the resource meter
says the computer is at 47% ram (128 MB) and less than 29%
on the hard drive. Any suggestions?

Becky - Look in the microsoft internet help - databse
section , there is an article no 290771 which looks as if
it might help - It would appear to be a problem with the
Program start up routines or loading of the Normal.dot
global template , so I am pleased to find it may not be a
virus after all - but still will need some reading up to
do before attempting to FIX good luck
