Word won't open doc files

When I try to open my document files with Word 2002 (on a
machine running Windows 2000 pro) I get a message "The
file xxxx is not available". This symptom began after the
following series of events:
1. Installed "corporate 8 norton antivirus" over
antivirus 2002. (I know, completely preventable!)
2. While doing a complex series of edits on multiple
documents my computer shut down (due to a 1 second power
outage in a windstorm) (OK, another lesson learned)

When the computer restarted it autorecover didn't work
(the files were listed in the window pane but were not
accessible.) I was able to find the autorecover files,
open them with wordpad, save them to disk, and then
transfer them to another computer. Also, I have
uninstalled BOTH versions of NAV (automatically and
manually using a tool that symantec has on its webpage).
I am an adminstrator on this computer and I have checked
permissions and all of that seems to be in order.

Any suggestions (short of reformatting the computer and
starting all over)?

Just FYI, this problem was resolved as follows: In the
Microsoft Knowledge Base article 329820 a similar problem
is described; the suggestion to edit the registry (Method
3) worked even though I have a later version of norton
antivirus on my computer (and had uninstalled it but the
registry entry was left behind). Once I removed the
offending registry entry I was able to reinstall antivirus
and everything is working fine.
