Word won't open document when connected to network

I've received a number of documents from colleagues that
causes Word (2000, XP and 2003) to freeze or hang up when
trying to open. If I save the document to the local HDD,
remove the network cable, then the documents open
straight away.

I am presuming this is a template issue, but when I open
the doc, I can't see any macros, tracking issues etc.
that could cause a problem. If I copy and paste the
content into a new document, this works fine.

Has anyone come across this issue before (I've checked
google and the newsgroups, and people have !) and
resolved it ? What would be handy is some sort of debug
mode that shows what word is trying to do when opening
the doc.

TIA, Danny

It could be the document is looking for the document template and it
is not available. When you disconnect from the network then Word will
only search for the template locally and will have a faster response
time.

Take a look under Tools/Templates and Add-ins and note the "Document
template". If this points to an unavailable network drive and/or
template then delete it so it will default to the Normal.dot.
