Word won't open files

I am stumped. I am running Microsoft office 2003 standard and I am having
issues with word opening files. When I try to launch a file it is giving me
an error telling me that the files caused serious damage last attempt at
opening. I have uninstalled and re-installed office and have checked the
file for corruptions. The file is fine, but word will not open anything and
the files I do manage to get open will shut down once I make it the active
document and try to edit it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks.
