Word won't open in Windows98

Hi out there,

Last weekend I made a new year's clean up project into a mess when I deleted
lots of files off my C: of our Win 98 SE machine. I mistakenly thought all
systems files would be located in folders within Windows and therefore mass
deleted any standalone files on the C: drive that was not in a folder.

The result was that the machine would not boot. After some work & help from
this community I managed to reload some missing dll files and now it boots
fine and seems to work fine except that I just found now that Word will not
open. I assume this is related to my prior file deletion activity. As far
as I know Word is the only program that does not open but I don't use Excel
or Powerpoint much so haven't checked those. Primarily we use Outlook
Exchange and the browser - and they seem fine....

We get the 'exception, illegal process' type message and then it
closes...here is the data that is in the details:

WINWORD caused a general protection fault
in module HPFWIN13.DLL at 0016:00008662.

This is completely over my head. If anyone has a suggestion or can point me
to another community that would be a better place for this type problem it
would be much appreciated.

HPFWIN13.DLL is probably the printer driver file for your Hewlett
Packard printer. Try deleting the printer from Start | Control
Panel | Printers, and then add the printer again.

The logical solution would be simply to reinstall Word from the original CD.
Is that not an option for some reason?

It is an HP pavillion (and there is an HP inkjet printer) so am not sure if
that is a driver for the printer or for something of the pc itself.....but
will try and look up to clarify....thanks for the tip

that's an idea. Would re-install of Windows be separate from all of Office
97?...or will I have to re-install the whole enchilada?

If you have Windows working, I would try just reinstalling Office 97. The
later versions of Office have "repair" features. I don't recall if Office 97
does. If it does have an option to repair & replace missing files &
settings, then that's exactly what you want.

The printer will not work without a driver! The software required will be on
a disc supplied with the printer, or you should be able to download it from
HPs support site.
