Word won't open: Solution

Dell solved my problem on Word 2000 not opening:
In Search, Windows, file name:
Normal.dot
Change file(s) to:
Normal.old
Re-start:
Windows will generate new file(s):
Normal.dot

This file resides in:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft

Norton did not catch this as a virus, so why did several of
us have this problem in the same short, recent time period,
two years after we installed Word 2000?

Somewhere along the line the Normal.Dot got corrupted (there are a
myriad of reasons for this I understand).
That's why I never keep anything of importance in the Normal.dot
(macro's, for ex.)
Learned this the hard way!

When you say "..why did several of us have the same problem", are you on
a network?
If so you should ensure that each user has his own Normal.Dot (vs.
sharing one copy).
