Word won't open

In Microsoft Office 97, when trying to open Word, the Word
logo flashes up for a second, disappears, and the program
does not open. This problem started suddenly, without
warning and without explanations. Tried uninstalling and
reinstalling Office several time - does not help. Tried
uninstalling Office and reinstalling Word only - doesn't
help.

I am running Windows XP and Office 97 Pro worked very well
with it until a few days ago. All other programs (Excel,
Power Point, etc.) work perfectly; Word is the only
problem.

Any suggestions?

If you display the Task Manger is Word or a Winword.exe process
running? Also, does the Word task appear on your Taskbar?

If so then the Word window could be opening off the Desktop.

Here are a few things to try to get it back:

- Open another window, right-click an empty area of the Taskbar and
select "Cascade"

If that doesn't work then:

- Right-click the Word task and click "Restore" if necessary
- Right-click again and select "Move"
- Use one of the arrow keys on the keyboard to "lock in" the move
command
- Use your mouse and see if you can move it back to the Desktop

If the above doesn't work then follow the steps in this article for
recreating the Word\Data key in the Registry. Note that all you need
to do is rename/delete the Toolbars value of the key instead of
recreating the entire key:
