Word won't open!

When I open Word 2003 I no longer get a page to look at - only an icon in my
task bar. When I right click and choose 'maximize' nothing happens. I even
uninstalled Office 2003 and reinstalled it but it is still happening. Excel
is working fine.

I have got the similar problem in one of our office computers.
Word is opened only for a second and then it shuts down.
I have removed and reinstalled Office 2003 - and the problem persists.
Word cannot be used in Office any more.
What to do?

If the Word icon is in the Taskbar, then Word has opened off screen. To
bring it back, open a second Word document, right-click in the Taskbar and
choose one of the Tile options. Both word windows should reappear. Close one
of the documents and resize the other document to fit the screen: then close
Word. Reopen it and it should be OK again.

I noticed that the Outlook standard pst-file caused Word crashing. That may
be due to some virus infected messages in the file.
When the file was changed to a new one, the problem disappeared.
The old file could still be used as an archive but not as the standard
message receiving datafile.

Thank you Terry, - it sounded like a great idea. Unfortunately, Word is not
showing up with any of the tile options! Do you have a plan B? :)

When you open two documents (say by double-clicking two documents in Windows
Explorer, do two documents appear in the Taskbar? When you right-click an
empty area in the Taskbar, are there no Tile options available? What happens
when you select Tile Vertical?

Yes, 2 docs appear in the taskbar, and each will highlight appropriately when
I click on it, but nothing appears. When I right click on taskbar, I am
offered the usual Windows XP tile options (cascade, tile horizontally,
vertically) but whichever one I choose, it doesn't include any of my word
documents. For example, if I have 2 internet explorers open and 1 excel and
2 word, it will only tile the excel and 2 internet explorers. Word is
ignored.

Ok, do it with ONLY two Word documents open and in the Taskbar (close
everything else that's in the Taskbar). Right-click on each and make sure
that they are Maximised (though still off screen). Then right-click and
select Tile. (This is necessary because only when both are maximised will
the documents tile: if one or the other isn't maximised, the tile operation
won't work.)

Julie:

Did you ever solve this? I just had the same thing happen. I followed all
of the "tile" advice, and it didn't work. I'm still stuck. Were there any
other solutions?

Thanks, Dave

What happens when you open just Word with two documents and Tile? What
version of Word and OS are you using?

Terry:

I'm using office 2003 and windows XP.

When I do this (2 word docs and nothing else) and go through the tile
recommendation, whether vertical or horizontal, nothing at all happens.
Shutdown, restart, two docs, maximize both and tile, but to no avail.

PP, XL, and outlook all work fine, and I can tile them. Just my workhorse,
word won't come up!

I'm also on a job 9000 miles away from my disk so I may have to wait for a
week, though re-installing didn't help Julie from the sound of her note!

Hello everyone:

I had one free shot with MSN office help, and they were successful. We
drilled down (eventually) to the microsoft registry files. Ssomehow either my
data folder, or my options folder got corrupted. We renamed them, which
causes the program to create new ones, and the problem went away. Still don't
know how it happened. I have a feeling it has to do with online music, but am
not sure. Saved for now, but I may be back!
