Word won't open

Hi, I posted before and was sent to the best site, wordmvps.org....thank you
so much for all your help, but I need more still. I am still unable to open
word, with the exception of going to run and typing winword.exe /a but that's
not a way for me to get my work done. I have tried checking for template
corruption, but had no luck. First, I can't find normal.dot, so I renamed
every .dot file I could find, didn't change anything. I tried the
instructions for a corrupt register key, but still no help. Printer drivers
aren't an issue and I don't have Norton Antivirus anymore, and I
doublechecked that, so I'm back at my starting point. Word starts to open
and then I just get an error message saying that the program can't be opened.
It used to indicate that it was an unregistered user using an unlicensed
version but I don't even see that anymore. I know I'm neither the most nor
least computer savvy person out there but I spend hours on this every evening
and I'm so frustrated. Has anyone encountered something as weird as this?
Again, I read anything that is suggested and I am trying my best to fix this
and I truly appreciate your help.
Thank You.

Start Word with the /a switch.

1. Choose Tools - Options - File Locations.

2. Note the location in User Templates.

The latter is where Normal.dot resides.

Close Word, grab a baseball bat, and use Windows Explorer to navigate to the
location noted in #2 above. Choose Tools - Folder Options - View tab, and
find the settings that tell WE to display hidden and system files.

Normal.dot should show up now. Whack it with the baseball bat.

Or not.

Rename it to OldNormal.Dot, or something equally not "normal.dot".

Will Word start okay now?

Herb,
You have officially saved my life. The file was hidden, I can't believe I
didn't think about that. And I did have a golf club nearby as that was the
next step in dealing with this problem. THANK YOU so very much for saving
me, I appreciate it more than you know.

Sacrilege even thinking about abusing a golf club in such a manner!
