Word won't open!

Would appreciate if anyone can advise me:

I am using a winXP machine with Office2000 installed. One day, every
time I opened Word a 'This program has to close...' window came up and
Word would shut down.

Having researched the problem on the web I am aware of the 'renaming
normal.dot' tactic, but running a search does not find any instances of
normal.dot. I then tried running the command 'winword /a' which
successfully opened Word, but as soon as I try to access any of the
menus I get the same problem. I have deleted the 'data' key from the
registry that is advised on some sites but no improvement. If I try to
repair Word the machine tries to open windows installer but then
fails.

I have also uninstalled and reinstalled Office, but still no good.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix the problem without resorting to
formatting the drive and starting again.

Many thanks

Hi woj,

You should find Normal.dot under C:\Documents and Settings\[user
name]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
