Word won't print a file

Erilin

I have two Macs and an HP LaserJet connected through Ethernet. Both Macs
have OS 10.3.9 and Word 10.1.1. A Word document on the iMac someone emailed
to me opens on the iMac and print-previews OK, but it will not print, or
open the Preview Utility, or save as a PDF. When I use the PowerBook to
open the same file (through File Sharing), it works just fine -- prints,
opens Preview, and saves as a PDF onto the PowerBook's desktop. I
re-installed Word onto the iMac but it didn't improve anything. Any idea
what's wrong?

Thanks, Daiya, for the prompt reply. Does it make any difference that I
forgot to say that applications other than Word (Eudora, QuickBooks,
Filemaker, Excel, Entourage, et.al.) seem to print just fine on the iMac?
Does Word have its own printer driver? -- Erilin

Hi Erilin,

Here's some information that our Print expert has for this problem:

Word doesn't have its own print driver, but you could try these suggestions:

- Copy the contents into a fresh document and try to print that (print
record might be hoarked)

- Delete the printer and re-install it

- Run the following terminal command: "sudo killall -HUP cupsd"

- Try repairing disk permissions (word may not be able to access a resource
it needs)

- Check to ensure you're not using a print preset (if you are, then try to
do without that)

Overall, if it works on one mac and not on the other, it would suggest that
some problem in the mac's print settings is making word misbehave. Try to
print to PDF also.

Another thing - what happens when you say "Print"? Does the dialog
disappear, does it not go anywhere, do you get the print progress bar, is
there an error.

You can check to see if the job gets to the spooler by running this command
before and after the attempt to print and see if it yields different
results, if it does, Word is out of the picture, it's all OS from that
point: "sudo ls /var/spool/cups"

Let me know if these suggestions help in solving the issue.

Thanks,

Ritika [MSFT]
