Word won't renumber endnotes

I deleted several endnote references in the text of a document. The
associated references disappeared, but the automatic numbering won't renumber
to remove the gaps in the reference numbers. I've done "Select All" and hit
F9, tried changing the automatic numbering from 1,2,3... to a,b,c.... and
back again, saved and retrieved the document, all to no avail. In the print
layout view there is a grey line in the list of references above where the
first deleted reference used to be, but no lines in places where other
deleted references used to be. Does anyone have an idea how to force Word to
renumber?

Found the answer myself - I had "Track changes" turned on. It was necessary
to accept all reference deletions before Word would renumber.

I have followed these steps on the document I am currently troubleshooting,
and the renumbering still does not work. It is a book manuscript, almost 400
pages, so it will be an incredible amount of work to remove the endnotes and
reinsert each one again.

Are there any other alternatives?
