Word won't stay open

Word (v. 2003) won't stay open when I close a document or go to another task,
like e-mail. I think this is somehow related to my Outlook e-mail, as
Outlook uses Word for word processing. The company help desk couldn't figure
it other than to say that apparently when I close an e-mail Word figures
there is no other reason for it to stay open and so it closes. I can see the
logic there if Word is somehow "attached" only to the e-mail function, but
the question remains, why is it doing this, and how can I fix it! It never
used to do this! Unfortunately,I have no idea exactly when it started or
what I might have been doing at the time. Thanks for any help you might be
able to give!

Not sure I fully understand the situation.

If you have no Word document open, and use Word as an email editor, then
when you are done writing an email, Word closes... what is the problem,
exactly, with this?
Why would you want an empty instance of Word open?
