Word X and Jaguar (OS 10.2.5) Problems

I have been in Word hell since I installed Jaguar. My preferences keep
changing unexpectedly (e.g., my spellcheck favored British spelling,
suddenly Word tracked changes to the document onscreen, overwrite
turned on without warning, etc.). But the most frustrating thing right
now is that the footnotes are not functioning. When I delete a
footnote in the text, the in-text number disappears, but the text in
the footnotes window does not. When I delete that text myself, the
placeholder stubbornly remains and the rest of the footnotes do not
renumber. And when I move a footnote (dragging it, e.g., from the
middle of a sentence to the end of a sentence), it duplicates and
renumbers itself. I have moved the Microsoft User Data folder (per
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106970), and since then
I have not had any problem with polergeists in my preferences, but the
footnote problem persists. Has anyone else encountered and solved this
problem?

I'm no longer on OS X, but the general consensus is that 10.2.5 was a
terrible release. Try either upgrading to 10.2.6 or go back to 10.2.4.

This may or may not solve your current problem, but it may well prevent you
from having others.
