Word X crashes after installing updates...

HI!!

I installed Office X updates from Mactopia.....(All the available three) and
after that Word crashes and always pops up an "unexpectedly quit" box asking
me if I want to send error report or cancel.

I request you to be a little elaborate if you know how to fix this as I'm
no techie...

Many thanks..

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to fix Word X as
yet. To elaborate, I downloaded the updates for Max X (1.1.2, 1.1.4 and
1.1.5) and installed each one of them consecutively.

After I did this, Word X crashes whenever I try to open a .doc file. It
offers to send a report as Word X unexpectedly quit. It doesn't open even if
I try to start it without choosing to open a file. All other Office X
applications work fine (Excel, Entourage, Power Point). I use a MAC OSX
10.3.4. To add to the trouble I'm unable to locate my Word X CD to reinstall
all applications.

A speedy reply will be fantastic.

Many Thanks.

Did you work through the procedures listed on the link I gave you? If none
of those worked, did you follow the link for Office X troubleshooting that
is at the bottom of the page, and try the procedures there? There are a lot
of things you can do short of Remove and Reinstall (and note that
reinstalling would not help unless you run the Remove Office tool from the
Value Pack first).

Also, it is a good idea to repair permissions after installing updates. Try
that.

I'm having exactly the same problem, and am frustrated beyond words here. I installed the MS Office X 10.1.5 update today, and have not been able to open Word since. Yes, I've read the Microsoft documents related to this, and have gone through all the steps for checking for duplicate or corrupt fonts, corrupt prefs, corrupt templates... the whole thing. I even reinstalled Word from the CD. Also ran FontDoctor and Norton DiskDoctor. Nothing works. I've been 11 hours on this now, and am completely out of ideas, and patience. In the meantime, a major deadline is slipping away on me here...

Would love some specific direction!

Hi Kipley,

It sounds as if you reinstalled Word without first doing a full removal of
Office. That may have made things worse.

If I were you, at this point I would do a complete removal and
reinstallation of Office and all the updates. However there are other
troubleshooting procedures which you can try first, if you like. You will
find all the options, including the correct procedure for a remove/reinstall
at this site (If you're using Safari, you'll have to hit reload once or
twice; otherwise switch to IE):

Hi Beth:

Thanks for your reply. A lot has happened in the past 12 hours... here's the update:

I decided to do what you suggest, a complete removal and full reinstall of all Office components. I did this, and then checked Word as I reinstalled each upgrade. I made it through to 10.1.4, at which point the same problem occurred all over again! So I did another complete removal and full reinstall, and carefully reviewed every possible complication. The only thing I could see that I hadn't already tried was to do the 10.1.3 upgrade on its own, instead of in the 10.1.4. So I did that, and for whatever reason, this time it worked! I'm sure there's no logic to this, especially since the 10.1.3 seemed to have little or no impact on any Word files. But there you... another one for the casebooks!

Thanks again Beth!

Hi there!!

I did try installing 10.1.3. Assuming it would work for me too, however, I
get a message saying "The default location required for install could not be
found. I'm not too glad using 'text edit' on a daily basis. Can somebody
please help??

Many Thanks,
Madhu

Hi Madhu,

I wouldn't advise using Kipley's workaround. He *should* have gotten the
same results that you did; I have no idea why it worked for him.

It would be better if you told us exactly what your problem is. There are
various reasons why Word might crash.

As for reinstalling Office X, the correct procedure is detailed here:
