Word X Freezes When Opening Files from Finder

R

Ronald Wimer

My son has managed to corrupt a file on his iMac, but I just can't
figure out which one.

If you open Word X, you can open any document from within the
application. If Word X is running, you can open any document file from
Finder.

But if Word is not running and you try to open a document file from
Finder (causing Word to start), Word X hangs at the line saying
"opening welcome."

At that point Word is frozen and you have to Force Quit it. If you
open the application from its icon, it tells you that the file you
just clicked on in Finder is corrupt.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Ron

I repaired the Disk Permissions, which didn't help. But then I found a
corruption in a font file, which I changed.

Now, things are working again.

Follow-up: I fixed the permissions then I noticed a corrupted font
file, which I replaced. The two things seem to have taken care of the
problem.

If my follow-up is posted, ignore it. I have spent all evening going
to my son's room to force quit Word X on his computer. I am even more
confused than I was this morning.

Normally if Word does not get past the Welcome screen it's either a bad font
or disk permissions.

You may want to check your font folder again. However, I suspect you will
have to go for the Big Fix...

Locate the Remove Office utility on your Office CD and run it.

Then re-install Office, then repair permissions, then re-apply all the
service releases, then repair permissions again.

That should fix it, whatever it was.
