Following a rebuild, when I 'save as...", the dialog screen lacks the
'new folder' button. Any hints as to where I might find it?

Following a rebuild of what? What is there to "rebuild" in Word? The "New
Folder" button is in the extreme bottom left of the Save As dialog, as
always. If it's not there, quit Word and remove your Word preferences file
here:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/

where ~/ is your user folder. If you're in Word 2004, the file in that
folder to remove is com.microsoft.Word.prefs.plist . If you're in Word X,
it's the Word Settings (10) file.

Paul: Thanks for the response. I had a major hard drive problem, after
which I had to reload all programs, including Office X.
I found the preferences file (Word (10)) and trashed it, quit Word and
then started it again. On 'save as', the dialog window still lacks the
button in the left hand bottom corner.
At present I must save all documents to the desktop or a few requently
visited folders.
I should say that when I first detected the problem, I loaded Word
again, with no result. I am still in the same bind. Any other
suggestions? I am operating on Tiger on an iMaqc 500 MHz. Phillip

At the risk of insulting your intelligence / experience..
What happens when you click the button with the triangle in it to the
right of the suggested filename in the save as.. box? When it points
up, you should get the full dialog panel, including the new folder
button at the bottom left. With the triangle down, you only see your
recent and popular folders.
That has to be one of the poorest bits of UI design on the Mac
interface. The only thing nice you can say about it is that it is
better than it was pre-Panther.

Elliott: what an addle-pated fool I've been. Your suggestion has fixed
the problem. It only goes to show that years of experience count for
nothing if you only look for the most complicated solution! Thankyou.
