Word X not seeing Dingbats font

T

triangle

I have recently upgraded to OS X (v10.3.5) and installed Office for OS
X (v10.1.4). I am accustomed (in OS 9 and Word 98) to using Zapf
Dingbats to include check boxes on forms and questionnaires.

In Word X the Insert Symbols view of Dingbats shows only about 6 or 8
parenthesis type characters and the rest of the character map is blank.

Zapf Dingbats works correctly in Photoshop (OS X) and in Pagemaker and
Freehand (Classic). The font shows in Font Book and reveals its
'Repertoire' fully.

What must I do to access Dingbats correctly in Word X?

Any help appreciated.

Hmmm... Not easy. The short answer is "check your hierarchy of font
folders for multiple versions of Dingbats. Word will use the one "closest"
to itself -- which may be a different version from that used by the other
applications."

The long answer is to go carefully through your font collections and ensure
you keep only the latest copy of each font. Note that OS X has multiple
font folders (up to five) but that it searches a hierarchy and uses the
first instance of each font that it finds.

For a long and happy life, it pays to switch OFF the various font managers
people run. You should certainly not have more than one running.

Once you have cleaned up your font lists, reboot you system. This forces OS
X and Word to rebuild their font caches.

Cheers
