Word X (only) will not print

B

Brian Soper

I have a G4 Powerbook running OSX 10.2.8 and Office v.X with the
10.1.5 update. I cannot print any Word documents to a postscript
printer over a network. The same file will print just fine to a USB
connected EPSON printer. If I copy file contents to textedit, than back
to Word, it will print to the postscript printer. If I save as a PDF it prints
fine. If I copy the original file to another mac running OS 9.2 and Word
98 it prints fine. I have tried many of the same things described below
to fix this with no result. The text below was pulled from two other
users of this newsgroup, so I am not alone with this problem. Please,
help us!

Hi all,

I have a strange one here. When I try and print a Word doc (Office
10.1.5), it only prints one page. It happens to any word document
(new or old) and to multiple printers. I can print multiple pages in
PowerPoint and I.E. 5.2.3 just not Word. I have a Mirrored G4 running
OS 10.2.8. The only outside thing I think it could be is that I
transfer Word docs from my G4 at work to my Dell at home (running XP
Pro and Office XP). But, it doesn't happen to the PowerPoint files.
Here are some things I've tried.

1. Deleted the Microsoft Office folder and re-installed the app.
(also deleted the preferences in the user's folder). Not sure if
Office hides any other Word settings elsewhere?

2. Deleted all printers in Print Center and readded. (also checked
for updated drivers). Mainly I print to a HPLJ 4600.

3. If I'm in a Word doc that I know doesn't print, if I go to Print
and save as PDF, I can print all pages of the PDF. Also, since I have
my preview setup to use Adobe Reader 6.0, I can print from Preview.

4. Tested printing from another user account on that machine, same
result.

5. Repaired permissions multiple times. Also ran Disk Warrior, there
are no problems with the drive.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I too have had problems with Word (in Office VX) which refuses to
print with Panther on G5 1.8 using Epson Stylus Photo 960 and 820

Using Mac OSX 10.2.7 I had no problems printing from Word VX.

After upgrading to Panther, I cannot print from Word in Office VX.
All other programs print correctly (and I can save Word files as
RTFs and print them from TextEdit or PDFs and print from Acrobat, but
not from Word.

Very strangely, Excel VX prints fine!

None of the following actions alterred this behaviour.

Re-installing Office and trying to print in:

a) the original version
b) after using Office X 10.1.4 Update
c) after using Office X 10.1.5 Update

Printer settings and print preview all operate correctly, However,
on all occasions when print is requested (either from the print button
on the toolbar or "Print" from the File menu) the Print Process
bar flashed by, but nothing comes out of the printer (and the Print
Utility shows no jobs in the que).

I tried using a second printer - excatly the same outcome.

Any comments/help would be greatly appreciated

Has anyone else had this problem - and has anyone any suggestions
for
a cure

I've also got the exact same problem. It either refuses
to print some docs or prints a single blank page. I've
also tried all of the ideas below and the patches with no
luck. Good luck in your efforts and if I find anything I
will certainly post it. This is seriously frustrating to
say the least. For now, I tell the users having problems
to save as PDF first, then print the PDF file.

Thank you Patrick. At least now I know I am not alone. My IT people
can't figure this one out either. When they check the system, they
found my machine was only spooling a small fraction of the files I am
trying to send. I often get just the first page too, although it has the
expected content, not blank. Lately I get nothing though.

One current theory is that we are experiencing some kind of postscript
error. Apparently HP printers use postscript emulation to avoid paying
royalties to Adobe. Since we seem to be able to print after copying text
to textedit, then back to word, it indicates we might be stripping out
some kind of postscript formatting imbedded in the document. I have
tried changing fonts to try to eliminate potentially corrupt fonts, with
no change. That is why I thinkll it is a formatting issue. Even if a
postscript error is the problem, I currently do not know how to fix it.
Any ideas?
