Word X "Sent To -> Mail Recipient" no longer works with Quickmail?

In Word 2001, our users were able to use the File -> Send To -> Mail
Recipient menu to send a document via Quickmail, our corporate mail program.
Some of of users have come to reply on this feature as critical to their
workflow, however, the feature no longer works in Word X. While there are
certainly other ways to get a Word doc attached to a Quickmail email, the
Send To command from within Word is sorely missed by a lot of our users.

Is there any way to restore this functionality so that Word X can Send To
via Quickmail?

Thank you.

Hi

Is QuickMail chosen as the default email client for OSX? Word uses whatever
is set as the default (probably via Apple Mail preferences or the OSX
preferences panel)

Hi Jim - yes it is. It is set as the default, and things like browser mailto
links in all browsers recognize QuickMail as the default. On machines with
Entourage installed, I can set the default mail client to Entourage and the
Send To from Word works with Entourage. If Mail.app and QuickMail are the
only 2 email apps installed, Word launches Mail.app, even though QuickMail
is set to default mail client. If I move Mail.app to the trash to try to
force it to use QuickMail (now the only email app on the HD), the Send To
Mail Recipient menu becomes grayed out (but QuickMail is still seen as the
default for mailtos, etc.)

It's like this on every Mac in this location (many hundreds) - so it isn't
just an isolated case. It has been "broken" in every version of OS X and
every version of Office X. It worked perfectly under OS 9 and previous
versions of Office/Word. We asked CE Software (previous owners of QuickMail)
about it a while ago and they said "it's a Microsoft problem, not a
QuickMail problem."

Hrmph :)

Any other suggestions?

Thanks - Laurie

Laurie,
It does seem that some fault must lie with QuickMail... they have
issues with receiving default mail client protocols. See the Jaguar
compatibility page:

Is QuickMail Applescriptable? If so, then we could do a workaround that
way.

Given that no other application ignores Quickmail's default status, except
Word, the fault is more likely with Word. Why else would Word's Send To
Recipient menu item be totally grayed out when QuickMail is the only mail
application installed? QuickMail isn't ignoring the command from Word -
Word is never sending the command to begin with!

I don't know if it's Applescriptable. I looked on MacScripter and didn't see
any scripts in the archive for QuickMail, so I assume the answer is no. If
there is a way, I'd be grateful for the solution.

Word is looking in the Operating System for applications marked "MAPI
compliant". If QuickMail does not correctly set the flags advertising its
capabilities in the operating system, then Word concludes that there are no
mail-enabled application servers for it to call, so it does not try to call
them.

Actually, the term "MAPI" (Mail Application Program Interface) may not be
the correct term for the feature on the Mac, but that's the general idea.
An application announces its capabilities as both a client and a server to
the operating system, and the operating system publishes those details.
When Word is looking for a server application to send mail, it asks the
operating system which applications can do this, and which one is the
default.

QuickMail is not appearing in the answer. Or Word cannot understand the
answer that it is getting from QuickMail. Given that Mail.app and Entourage
both work, I have a sneaking suspicion that I know whose fault it is, but
let's not start a slanging match this morning :)

Hope this helps

Thank you, John, for your answer. Although I still don't have a solution, at
least I now have an explanation that makes sense! It alleviates a little
bit of my frustration, which is often half the battle :)
