Word X templates

Dave Hayes

I need to create a bunch of Word and Excel templates for Office X users on
Mac OS X 10.2.6 with the following characteristics:

1. When a user opens one it needs to "open a copy" transparently I.E.
without any "read only" or whatever interrogative. The original must remain
"locked" so as not to get AFU by users.

2. Need to assign "spaces" where user input goes so that for example they
can't go past carriage return causing everything below to get pushed down a
line and causing page break etc.

I hope to use Remote Desktop to push them out over network into existing
"XYZ Co. Templates" folders in the users "home" Documents folders on local
hd's without incurring any "permissions" headaches.

Any pointers on accomplishing the above appreciated.

Hi Dave,

In Microsoft Word...

Create the document you wish to use as your template. The form field is
easy to solve. From Word's menu choose View > Toolbars > Forms then use
the text form field. Control-click the field in the document to set the
limitations you desire. To create the template use File > Save As and
choose the file type of Word Template (instead of Word document). The
document will have a file extension of .dot. Before saving you might
want to go to the File > Properties dialog and check the box that saves
a preview. Saving a preview will let a preview show in the project gallery.

In Excel...
Same idea. Save the document as a template (.xlt) extension.

If you want your templates to appear in the Project Gallery put them
into the My Templates folder.
