Word X - Various Errors when Pulling files from a Netware 5.1 Server with NFAP.

Hello all,

First I have Word X with the service release 1 update. I have a Netware 5.1
server with SP 7. When a user (this happens to more than 1 user) opens a
word doc from the server, it opens fine, but when the user saves the file a
few errors occurs:
1. Word crashes and says word terminated unexpectedly.
2. Word can not complete the operation because too many files are open.
3. There is an unrecoverable disk error on file Word Work File D_862. The
disk you're working on has a media problem that prevents Word from using it.
Try the following: *Try formatting another disk. *Save the document to
another disk.

These errors can happen any time. A user can save 4 documents and then get
the following error?

Any ideas what this could be?

TIA

Hi Jay,

There are some long standing issues with Word and saving to a server, but
what really rings a bell in your description is the 'Work File D...' error.
Another newsgroup poster was recently able to tie this error to Virex's
Active Virus Detection. When he un-checked it in the Virex preferences, he
stopped getting this error in Word. Could this be your problem?

If un-checking Active Virus Detection gets rid of this error but you're
still seeing the others, post back. In fact, if this workaround takes care
of all three issues, please post back anyway. It would be very helpful to
have this confirmed.

Beth,

Thank you for answering. I am not running any desktop antivirus on these
desktops. However I am running Symantec AV Corp. Ed. 9.0 on my Servers. I
could try to make an exception for the directories... What else could I do.
I noticed my Netware volumes are tradional compressed. I am going to remove
the volume and re-create it as NSS. However, does word 2004 take care of the
issues we are seeing?

Thanks again,

Jay.

Hi Jay,

I'd like to be able to say that Word 2004 solves these problems, but I
can't. The Save to Server issues seem to be tied to the OS, and updating
the OS fully does improve things, though it won't necessarily cure the
problem. What is your version?

Also, you said you have Word X with the SR 1. Have you updated all the way
to Office X 10.1.6? In addition to security matters, other issues were
addressed in the later updates. See here:
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/>

Since the "Work File D" error has been tied to virus protection, I would
explore any options in that area that you can. Unfortunately, I have no
expertise with servers but others here do, and hopefully one of them will
chime in. So keep checking back.

Finally, check the following URL for more on Save to Server issues. It's
outdated, but you might find something of use.

(If using Safari, you'll have to hit refresh once or twice; it's better to
switch to another browser.)

Sorry not to be of more help.
