Word X won't open 2001 files

With the latest version of Word for Office X, none of my Word 2001 files will
open. They all default to Text Only where they appear as giberish. Any
ideas?

Are you doubleclicking to open the files, or using File | Open? If using
File | Open, check that it is not set to "Recover Text from Any File", which
is a sticky option and only resets manually.

I have a similar problem. Word X (10.1.4) fails to open "Microsoft Word 10.0" files, but has no problem with "Microsoft Word 9.0" files. I found "Microsoft Word 10.0" embedded in the files that I can't open. I used the UNIX command "strings <filename>" in the Terminal application to find the version information.

This may be a different problem. If these Microsoft Word 10.0 files came
from Windows Word, made by Word 2002, they may be digitally signed and thus
impervious to opening in Mac Word. What do you mean by "I can't open"? Do
you get an error message? Nothing at all? Is this just when you double-click
them? What happens when you try File/Open within Word?

I get the "Convert File" dialog box, whether I double-click or use File | Open. The dialog box prompts me to choose a file format

Convert file from
Text Onl
MS-DOS Tex
Rich Text Format (RTF

Hi Alex:

Go into Preferences and switch OFF "Confirm conversions at open."

If the file IS a Word document, you will not get the dialog. If it's not,
you still will see it.

The reason is that Word needs to "Open" the file to determine whether the
content is really a Word document, and if so, of which format. By setting
Confirm Conversions, you are telling Word to ask you instead of looking for
itself.

Cheers
