Word X won't start, unexpectedly quits at open

Word 10.1.8 was working fine but all of a sudden won't start from the
application icon. I can open an existing doc. but can't open a
template. I reinstalled the app. and was asked for the auth. code
which I no longer have, so I trashed the Office folder and transferred
the folder from a working copy on another computer but had the same
results. I removed the font folder and trashed the Normal template as
suggested in the Help files but no help. Any ideas?? And where can I
get the auth. code for my registered product??

Well, when Word didn't start, here's what you should have done:

Now that you've reinstalled--which pretty much never solves anything in
MacOffice, unless you Remove first--and then trashed part of the
application and randomly replaced it, I'm not sure what will happen, as
it's hard to tell whether that process might have broken anything
essential. If you had the authorization key, I'd suggest Remove and
Reinstall to get a clean system. But go ahead and try the other
troubleshooting steps and hope--although, if it's asking for a license
key, I'm not sure you can use it even if you fix it.

The authorization code/license key/CD Key should be on the CD case that
the install CD came in. Can you find it?

I'm not sure whether you can get a replacement one from MS or not, at
this point--this page addresses that--but Office X might be past its
official support date. Not sure.
