Word X won't start

My wife's hard drive had to be replaced. I installed Office X from the
CD, then ran updaters (10.1.2-5). But Word X won't open. Whenever I
try to launch it, I get the message that it has unexpectedly quit.

Help! Please. This is a new one to me.

Beth,

Thanks, I think....

I tried the Repair Disk Permissions thing with no success.

The Web page you sent is a little confusing. It says to check for
duplicate fonts in three places: OS 9 System Folder (is this the folder
marked simply "System Folder"?); OS 10 Library (there are several
"Library" folders); and Users: Library (pretty sure I know which one
that is).

I assume none of these are in the OS 10 System Folder (it cautions you
not to mess with these)?

So, I resorted to method # 2 from the info you sent. Problem is, in OS
9 you cannot rename the Fonts folder.

What a mess!!

My Office X CD has no uninstaller, so how do you get rid of all this
stuff from Office and re-install? Or will I just have the same problem?

Beth,

I have now tried every method suggested by the Web page you sent. None
of it resolves the problem. Betcha there's something really basic going
on that neither of us has thought of.

Again, how do I uninstall Office X and start over? I've done the
install successfully at least three times with the same CD. This is the
first time there's been a problem.

The Remove Office tool is in the Value Pack on your Office CD.

If you have tried removing Office manually and reinstalled it 3 times on the
same computer, that can cause problems in itself, by the way.

If you think you have customizations you want to keep, see here, though they
could also be related to the problem.

Hmmm...Didn't see it there. Maybe I was looking for the word "uninstall."

No, not on the same drive. This one's brand new, first time for it.
Once on the previous - crashed disk - and once on my own computer.

I meant I tried everything suggested under the title "quit unexpectedly"
at startup.

Ah, right. I was picturing you going step-by-step through all the steps
listed on the Troubleshooting Index, rather than using the Diagnosis page
(which also has the link to Remove and Reinstall, up near the top, but no
matter :) Assuming you tried both the "most likely" and "other
possibilities," that probably is everything short of remove and reinstall,
then. It definitely hits all the basic stuff. Anyhow, the Remove and
Reinstall page suggests some best practices, as well as telling you where to
find the Remove tool.

Good luck, hope it sorts it.

Dayo,

Remove and reinstall solved nothing. Thinking of reformatting the HD.
Maybe the Mac shop guy put some stuff on it that he shouldn't have.

If you can think of anything else, let me know. Thanks for the assist.
