Word X

Glenn Forte

I have used Word X for several months with no problem. All of a
sudden it won't load. Every time I try to open a document or just start
word from the dock or any other place it loads the document or a new
blank document and immediately quits. The message reads "Word has
unexpectantly quit. No other files were affected." Any ideas what
might be the cause, or better yet the solution.

Thank you,

Glenn

In attempting to track down "corrupt fonts" I discovered that I was
unable to pinpoint specific ones, but that there seems to be a limit
on the total number of fonts that you are allowed to have on your
system when using Word (or Office X in general).

I eliminated fonts until it didn't crash any more, then tried adding
some back in. No matter which fonts I try to add back in, it crashes.
I don't know what the limit is but I have a few hundred fonts.

(Luckily I can open .doc files in AppelWorks, (sort of)).

Hi Michael,

Are you saying that you're okay adding fonts back up to a particular number
and then, no matter what font(s) you add back, Word won't launch? What's a
"few hundred" fonts? I wasn't aware of a limit but there may be one.

I just realized that you never said what version of Office/Word X you're in.
Have you updated *at least* with the Office 10.1.2 updater? You actually
should have that plus the 10.1.4 and 10.1.5 updaters. I suggest you get
fully updated and also that you repair disk permissions after each update:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select
your hard disk, then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair
Disk Permissions".

Also, with Word closed, find and delete the Office Font Cache (10) from your
~/library/preferences/microsoft folder. Now do a re-boot of your computer.
This forces OS X to recompile its font menu. Not sure it will help in this
case but it's worth a shot.

Hope something here helps.

Yes I have up-to-date versions of Office and OSX. And yes, I
frequently repair disk permissions.

I ran an Applescript to give me a complete list of fonts to see how
many I had. (Over 500). When I tried to print this list from TextEdit
the system completely froze up and I had to do a hard restart. (First
time I've had to do this since Jaguar.)

Anyway, once I restarted I was able to bring up Word again. This is
consistent with previous experience. Word starts crashing but after
certain restarts (not every restart because this is one of the things
I always try) it starts working again.

I'll keep track of your advice to "delete the Office Font Cache" for
when the problem re-occurs.

Thanks for the help

Mike
