WORD XP/2003 Problem: How to combine different cells in a table?

Hi all,

In create a table, I often needs to combine several cells in the table into
one cell. If the cells-to-be-combined are regular, I can combine them
without difficulty; but what if the cells-to-be-combined are not regular?
How to combine a top-cell with length 1inch with a bottom cell with length
1.5inch into one cell?

I just want these irregular cells into one cell... how can I do that?
