Word XP AutoText Conflict

R

Rhonda E. Gray

I have a global template containing AutoText. When I
type a word beginning with the same four characters as an
AutoText entry in the global template Word crashes. the
recovered document shows the typed characters followed by
lines of the letter y. If I open the global template and
type the same 4 characters Word does not crash.

Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution.

Yes, I have recreated every AutoText entry. It appears
that if the autotext name is not unique, Word has an
issue with it. For example, if I create the
AddressLayout autotext and type the address, Word crashes
when I type the r. If I create an autotext named
Associated and type asso, Word crashes.

Hi
I'm experiencing exactly the same problem.
One thing I've noticed is that autocomplete doesn't pop up at all.
Also, I had no autotext entries in normal.dot - they were all in a
global template.
When I put a single autotext entry into normal.dot the problem stopped
occurring (so far).
Also, this is only a new thing since I recreated normal.dot.

Hi Beth
No I didnt recreate normal.dot from my own template.
I started Word using /a switch, changed page set, default font, etc
and let Word create a new one.
I then moved the file to the desktop and opened and made changes to
styles and a few other things.
I didn't copy any customizations across because I wanted to start
fresh.
I deleted all the default autotext because I keep all company standard
autotext in a startup template.
Since my last message I've again recreated normal.dot and I'm no
longer experiencing the problem.

Thanks for the update Donna. Glad to here all is working again. :)

Although I don't think creating a new Normal.dot is typical behavior
when starting Word using the /a switch. Are you encountering a prompt
to save Normal.dot each time you exit Word perhaps?

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
