Word XP bug fix

Does anyone know the way around a bug in Word XP which causes problem with
auto format. When I select a formatting option, numbering, bold anything in a
document, word erroneously applies the format to the whole document. How can
I stop this? I have all latest updates installed - thanks.

It isn't a bug, it's a feature! Um, er, actually it's an option setting gone
