word xp cannot save - bogus space error

Word XP failed to save a small (78k) file with a
message that there was insufficient space. I was
attempting to save in the My Documents folder on the
C: drive which had 97 GB available. Notepad is able
to save there. If I attempt to save the same file to
a diskette I get the same message. Changing name and
directory doesn't help. Cut and paste to a new document
also fails. When I gave up and quit Word I was
able to restart it and save there. What happened and
could I have done anything to salvage the document?
