Word XP cann't browse

When I try to open a document in my winXP with MSWordXP and I click
Browse, the computer hangs for a long time then it comes back with a
list of files and folders, and if I double-click into one of the
folders to see its contents it hangs for a long time again before
showing the content, what can be the reason for this behavior?
