Word XP closes violently from Menu

I can open Word, but I can not access the FILE command or
the TOOL command in the menu. If I attempt to do so,Word
closes down, asks if an error report should be sent,
and "recovers". The whole thing repeats. I have
uninstalled, reinstalled and upgraded (I did have XP home
and Word 2002)
I now have Windows XP Professional and Word XP.
Sound like others have the same problem.
Any ideas?
