Word XP crashes on file close when using user defined templates

I have produced templates in 2003 that are crashing in Word 2002 on file,
close. The users have a considerable number of AutoText and personal macros
stored in their normal.dot templates. Does anyone have any experience of how
to troubleshoot this problem?
Many thanks

You could get them to save their AutoText and macros in a separate template
which they should add to their Word Startup folder. They can do this by
creating a new template and use Organizer to copy across their
customizations. That will shrink their normal.dots to a more moderate size
and make Word faster to open, etc.

Also make sure that their temp folders are empty when all applications are
closed. Do this from a fresh reboot: go to the users' temp folders - usually
in Documents and Settings, Username, Local Settings, Temp - and delete all
the abandoned files.

Meanwhile, make sure that in Word 2003 you have checked the setting under
Tools, Options, Save tab to Disable Features introduced after... to ensure
that your templates are compatible.
