word xp creates shortcut in c:\

When a doc is opened in Word XP, it creates the c:\temp
doc file, but also a shortcut to this in c:\. When the
doc is closed the file in c:\temp is deleted (as ususal),
but the shortcut remains.

When a 2nd doc is opened, an error is displayed that the
shortcut (from the 1st doc) can't find the path specified.

Why are these shortcuts being generate? Are they required
for something?
How can I turn this off, so that we don't get the error
everytime we open a new doc?

Which operating system are you using? Opening a document should not create a
document in the c:\temp folder (a non-standard designation in Windows) nor
any temp file in the root of the C: drive.

Are you by any chance opening these documents from e-mail directly?
Are you using Windows 9x and have not set a temporary file location in
Windows?
What is the document location from Word > tools > options > file locations?

It sounds to me as though the recent file location and the Windows temp
locations have been altered from their original settings.

The same thing is happening on one of the computers in our office. It
is running Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 & Office XP. If you create a
new file in Word, it will create a shortcut to this file on F:\, no
matter where you save the new file a shortcut is created at the root
of the F:\ drive.

I have read a few other posts with similar behavior, unfortunately
most replies ask if you are sure it is not a temp file, which it is
not, it is most definitely a shortcut file. One reply said the
registry may be corrupt as far as where it looks for recent files
which kind of makes sense - I am looking into this now.

Checkout
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders
for the recent files folder setup.
