Word XP doc suddenly turns into blocks and symbols

A long word doc is being emailed back and forth and edited
by several execs. The doc appears to be fine, but
occaisonally while working on the the doc it will suddenly
freeze for a while and then all the text will turn into
blocks, symbols or simply disappear, causing the loss of
hours of work. This behavior is not consistent and affects
the entire document. Not just the edited protions. This
single document is the only one reported to have this
issue. No virus's have been detected. Using the "Recover
Text From Any File" feature only works partially and third
party recovery fixes do not work at all.

Is this document being opened from a network share? If so, this issue can
occur when there is a slow connection to the server while the document is
being edited. You may want to try enabling the following option in
Tools|Options|Save:

"Make local copy of files stored on network or removable drives"

Thank you for confirming my theory. This is Exactly what I
had told them the issue was. I wasn't aware of the Make
copy feature, but I have told them to copy the doc to
their pc while working on it, but I'm just the tech guy
what do I know. Thanks again
