Word XP documents remember template locations

It's not how we found this behaviour but it's a very easy way to experience
it.

I have two PC's connected to a W2K3 Domain Controller, for the test I
believe any DC will do.

The user on PC1 has created some word templates on his local drive (the
scenario makes sense if this is a portable, but for testing purposes I'll
ask you to abide me).

The user of PC2 notices some pretty templates being used and asks if he may
use them. User1 shares the location of the templates, let's say c:\templates
is shared as \\PC1\templates, and User2 starts creating documents from the
templates. It doesn't matter whether User2 creates the documents on his
local drive or the server, but let's suggest he does the right thing and
puts them on the server.

All's well until:
User1 is sick one day and doesn't come into the office, his PC is turned
off.

Every time User2 accesses a document which has been created from the
templates on PC1 it takes between 1 and 5 minutes to open.

I'd appreciate any comments but am particularly after a way this can be
rectified.

TIA

The delay is caused by Word searching for the attached template -
which is of course is not available since the share isn't available.

A hotfix is now available for Word 2002/Windows XP users:

Hi Beth,

unfortunately, though the events leading to the problem and it's
behaviour are exactly as described in the KB article the patch has no
effect.
