First d-click on doc --> Word goes open, doc goes not open
Second d-click on doc --> Word is open, doc goes open

Try reregistering Word in Windows by:

1. Windows Key+R
2. Type in

winword /r

and press OK. Nothing appears to happen but Word is reregistered. Test.

I assume that right-clicking on the file and selecting Open doesn't work
either? If so, you need to look for some add-in that is stopping this from
working correctly. If Word (.doc) is registered correctly to open Word, then
some third party add-in is interrupting it. Look in Word at macros and at
add-ins and see what has been installed. If you are using TweakUI, make sure
that you haven't changed a setting in there that is causing this annoying
problem.
