Word XP is VERY slow navigating for files

E

I have Word XP installed on Windows XP sp2.

Some time in the last week Word has become very slow (20 seconds) when
navigating for a file to "save as", "open", "insert", etc.

My PC is connected to a network and I have mapped drives.

The problem occurs on mapped drives and local disks.

All other programs run just fine.

When I open Word and select "open file" the Open dialogue appears.
Clicking in "look in" then just hangs for about 20 seconds then shows
data. I open a sub folder by double clicking and get the same problem.

As you can imagine - this is very painful so any advice would be
greatfully appreciated.

I had similar behaviour when a mapped drive became stale - in other
words, unavailable. OTOH, even with all mapped drives available, the
dialogue still performs with a delay of a second or two; that seems to
be normal.

Also, stale network printers can probably cause this. Look at Control
Panel/Printers and see that all printers are "Ready".

Make sure that all mapping is valid and that you have no other dead links.
