Word XP -- "Not enough memory or disk space to display or print the picture"

I started getting the error "There is not enough memory or
disk space to display or print the picture". Many of the
pictures on the document that were previously there simply
went away (and I don't have the originals!).

Document is only 8 Meg in size. I have tons of memory and
disk space still available.

Tried to delete the existing picture place holders
(thinking maybe one was causing the problem) and Word
crashes.
