word XP shutdown problem

Jim Clavin

I am using OfficeXP on WinXP Pro. Office was upgraded from 2000 a few months
after the WinXP Pro upgrade. During that time I have had no problems with
Word2000/WinXP Pro combo. After the upgrade to Office XP, Word consistently
crashes on exiting. I let it send the error report, it restarts. When I
close it the second time a screen pops up and closes very quickly saying
something about error writing to memory.

In the event viewer I see the following 2 messages regarding Microsoft
Office 10. The first one is more common:

1- "Faulting application winword.exe, version 10.0.4524.0, faulting module
ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.1217, fault address 0x00053f42"

2 - "Fault bucket 57680391"

All the other applications run fine and even Word runs okay saving files
properly. It just crashes on exit. Very annoying!

Any help?

Hi Jim,

Did Word come installed as part of Works Suite? If so then a common
cause for Word crashing on exit is the "Microsoft Works Suite Add-in".
Go to your Control Panel and in Add/Remove Programs uninstalled the
Works Suite add-in.

Note you are not uninstalling Word or Works, just an add-in that
provides Works functionality in Word.

No, Works has never been on this computer.
The upgrade history is as follows:
Win98SE / Office2000 / Frontpage2000
WinXP Pro / Office2000 / Frontpage2000
WinXP Pro / Office2000 / Frontpage2002
WinXP Pro / OfficeXP / Frontpage2002

The problem started right after the last upgrade.
All Windows and Office updates are installed

Hi Jim,

The problem could still lie in an add-in. Try starting Word using the
/a switch and see if the error still occurs. Go to Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If the error doesn't occur then go to Tools/Templates and Add-ins and
see if there are any global add-ins in the list. If so they can be
found in either your Office\Startup folder or Word\Startup folder.

If more than one move each file out of the folder one at a time until
you narrow down the template causing the error.

There were no add-ins, but running it with the /a switch worked. Since
normal.dot was the only thing left, I restored an earlier copy and
everything is working fine now.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
