Word XP sloooow

Ross

Suddenly a couple of our clients (Windows XP SP2 - Office XP SP3) have
problems in opening .DOC files, either locally or on the network. The two
systems are full patched via Windowsupdate and Officeupdate, antivirus
software is up-to-date and no malware has been detected after a deep analisys
with Ad-aware, Spybot and CWShredder.

If a user double-clicks on a DOC file, the MS Word splash screen appears but
nothing happens. The hard drive LED is not blinking. Then, 1 minute later,
Word suddenly remembers of the file and the user can eventually see it. We
found out that the "Save as" process is also very slow. Process Explorer from
Sysinternals shows that no other process is running in the background,
Winword.exe is just there and resumes 50-60 seconds later. We tried to
uninstall Office XP and reinstall it but it was no help: we still have the
very same problem.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

not currently available.

Hi garfield,
ah we already did that (looking for some info in Google Groups) but it was
no help. We disconnected mapped drives (actually just H: for users' home
folders) but MS Word is still very slow.

Two other possibilities come to mind (but you've probably seen these too
from googling):
1. The Word documents that open slowly may be based on a template that
is located on a network drive that is no longer available; and
2. If you are running Symantec/Norton AntiVirus, try disabling the
Office Plugin that comes with it. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office programs
with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more information.

Other possibilities are that you have changed or moved a template that Word
is looking everywhere for or the printer driver is corrupt or slow to
respond. A recent install that has forced some horrible add-in in
Word/Office such as anything from Symantec or Adobe.

Try the troubleshooting steps at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm to see if that
points to a problem.
