Word XP Spanish problems

I have a user running Word 2000, who receives word documents by email froma
colleague in Spain.
When my user opens these docs (either direct from the email or after saving
the attachment first) word closes.
Word just closes with no error or warning at all (either as soon as she
tries to open the document or after a few moments).

This behaviour occurs with all documents from Spain and is now happening
with some documents created in house.

Please can anyone suggest any causes for this?
