Word xp there are too many edits in the document

In a large word xp (SP3) document (221 pages, 23MB), when I try repeated
edit/undo or edit/copy/paste, I get the message "There are too many edits in
the document. The operation will be incomplete. Save your work"
The Start-up file is totally empty. There are no files with extension .wll
(see www.endnote.com/faqs in microsoft site).

23MB for just 221 pages sounds rather large. Are there many graphics
inserted in the document?
